The "Torre de l'Esperò Reyal" or "Torre dello Sperone" is one of the several towers, dating from sixteenth century, which have been preserved intact to this day and that embellish the historic city center. It was built in 1570 and replaced an earlier medieval tower.
This tower is also known as "Torre di Sulis", the name of a revolutionary of Cagliari, Vincenzo Sulis, who was imprisoned inside it for 22 years. The period of imprisonment lasted from 1799 to 1821, the year in which he received the grace by King Carlo Felice.
This beautiful tower, which overlooks the sea and is located in front of the best known and the most frequented square of Alghero, has been often the evocative venue for exhibitions, poetry readings and other cultural events. Through a narrow staircase you can reach the top, from which you can enjoy a fascinating view of the city and the sea that embraces it. From above you can fly low over the landscape, like a seagull soaring through the sky, you can discover precious details that you had not noticed from below, like a special glare of the sea, a flowery balcony or an interesting geometric perspective in the urban pattern.
The climb to the top of the "Torre di Sulis", as well as on the top of the other two main towers of Alghero ("Torre di Porta Terra" and "Torre di San Giovanni") with their magnificent views of the city, was made possible by the event Monumenti aperti ("Open Monuments"), a project of passionate and enthusiastic promotion of the historical, cultural and environmental heritage of our Island. A valuable opportunity for discovery and knowledge, offered free of charge thanks to the work and dedication of volunteers and students.
