IL BORGO DISABITATO DI REBECCU ✽ THE UNINHABITED VILLAGE OF REBECCU
Ghost villages have always fascinated me for the decadent and mysterious atmosphere I can breath. And this is the same atmosphere that I felt in Rebeccu, a district of Bonorva, in Sardinia.
The village is located at an altitude of about 400 meters halfway up the mountain of Cuccuru de Pischinas and it's reachable after some hairpin bends.
Rebeccu is today a nearly uninhabited village, yet in 1300 it was the most important and flourishing center in the area. In 1400 a decadence era began and the population diminished considerably due to famine and plague.
This is what history tells us, but many legends grew up around Rebeccu contributing to its charm.
Among them, the best known is the curse of the thirty houses thrown by Princess Donoria, who was feared in the country and considered a witch. For this reason, the inhabitants of Rebeccu forced the father of Donoria, King Beccu, to throw his daughter out of the country. The woman before leaving the village put a curse on it pronouncing these words: "Rebeccu, Rebecchei da 'e trinta domos non movei" which means "May Rebeccu never exceeds thirty houses." And so it was.
Another legend tells that in the castle of Rebeccu took place the marriage between Eleonora d'Arborea and Brancaleone Doria.
In this village time has stopped. The little streets immersed in the silence, the ancient houses, the small wooden doors and windows, the deserted square with a pretty white church. Here the modern world seems light years away. I walked around Rebeccu and stopped to contemplate every single house, every single glimpse. Bewitched by his legends I breathed another era.
Shortly after entering the village turning left you will find a beautiful green area from which you can admire the panorama, an infinite green expanse that is the plain of Santa Lucia.
